South Boston GROW | Design VIII Comprehensive Project
Food deserts have become a serious issue in large cities. Food deserts are determined by the criteria of a large expanse of urban environment that has minimal to no access to healthy foods. Instead, residents have to travel greater distances and outside of their neighborhoods to shop or they fall back on small corner stores that often cannot provide the healthy food that they need. Recently, the experimentation and development of urban vertical farming has provided an opportunity to solve this problem. With a group of my peers, we examined the particular need in South Boston and designed a vertical farm facility that not only integrated two growing methods in a greenhouse but also educational facilities and a public market that can help alleviate the food problem in the area.
From the left: The administration and counseling offices of the facility, a cafe space to serve some of the food grown there, and a kitchen space to teach residents how to prepare healthy meals.
