Basic Weaving Exploration

This is a 12" wide, 3 yd long hand woven piece, that is all about experimentation with materials and basic weaving techniques. It was done in a floor loom with a two colored (blue and cream) 5/2 cotton yarn warp. The objective was to experiment with different wefts and techniques. I used wefts such as cotton, leather strips, wool, wool robing, burlap strips, acrylic yarn, cotton muslin strips, felt fabric, nylon thread, tule fabric strips, rayon chenille, popsicle sticks, sticks, feathers, hemp and more.

- 18 inches of plain weave with material experimentation and weft variation
- 8 inches of twill weave (2/2, 1/3 and 3/1) with varying structures and weft variation
- 18 inches of lace/open work weave exploration including hand manipulated techniques such as leno, wrapping, brooks bouquet and danish medallions
- 8 inches of supplemental weft exploration of the soumak technique, inlay, tapestry interlock technique, and rya knots
- 6 inches of double cloth exploration
- 10 inches of free exploration
