PLASTiC

A campaign by a group of students to raise awareness of the throw-away mentality we have in relation to plastic bags.

This project came about in conjunction with the 5p tax implemented in Scotland on plastic bags at the time.

After researching people's use of plastic bags, we found that most members of the public have a cache of supermarket bags in their homes. This unneccesary overconsumption is what we were wanting to tackle.
It came as a surprise to us to find that the 'environmentally friendly' alternatives that are available in the form of hessian or bags that are made from more durable types of plastic have more of an impact on the environment in the long run rather than bog standard plastic bags.
There were a few solutions that we found to this problem, all revolving around making use of the cache of bags that most people have under their sink.
Creating keyrings that held space to store a single use plastic bag was one of our solutions, which we handed out at our exhibition.

Another came in the form of knitting a more durable 'bag for life' using recycled strips of single use bags.
