Morphography
2011 - Cheeyoon Lee
This project will extend the pedagogy of geometric rigor, digital techniques, and representation. We focus on the development of surface and its relation to curves and volume. The contemporary notion of surface in architecture is due to advances in science, technology, and material production. While planes are inert and defined by x,y,z coordinates, surfaces are dynamic and defined by a u/v matrix. Advanced software such as Maya allows us to track and control the distribution of geometry across a surface. We will be understanding landscape in its more superficial sense. For us it is only about surface and its related geometric and morphological properties. As a visual studies problem we are liberated from the complex performative, functional, and programatic requirements that make up an architectural project. Ours will be a proto-architectural construct. This should provide a pedagogical framework for understanding two distinct conceptions of landscape.
