Rebirth of a historical water system
The project aims at establishing a publicly visible watercourse from a residential neighborhood to a new mixed-use development waterfront along the Charles River.
A building material storage ground located in a geological depression area in the larger site context was found as the historical Fanueil brook and pond through historical maps and photographs. This finding inspired a closer look at the evolution of human-water relationship and eventually led to the design concept of a modern water system.
A green alley network with several water playgrounds in the sub-watershed of historical Faneuil Brook serves the residential neighborhood, while a waterfront with designs ranging from rainwater plazas, aquatic botanic garden, natural swimming pool and reconstructed wetlands make the Charles River interactive with the city.
The project provides a lens for the citizens to see how water within an urban context of various land use types could move and transform, and how it could shape people’s cultural life.
