Freshman Design Final

This was a self directed project made for my freshman Design class final. I had chosen to be inspired and in some way emulate the type of surface design that was being done in the Chanel haute couture ateliers. I had seen some videos that the famed design house had posted on YouTube, videos of the atelier workers as they used various different techniques and embellishments to build a completely unique and incredible textile.

The first textile I made used laser cut silk chiffon and glossy wovens to create a layer that could play with light in a different ways. The textile was created with hand dyed muslin that was then laser cut into floral shaped. The last, again used laser cut floral motifs and was embellished with gold seed beads and small pearls. To keep with the tradition, all of this, with exception of the laser cutting, was done by hand. In the end, this project convinced me to switch from Industrial Design to Textiles.
