These series of prints were done as the final project for my Surface Design Class. The prompt was to make a series of printed designs that had a historical component, redone in a modern way. I decided to use an Argentinean Aguayo, a traditional cloth used throughout the Andes, and a devotional painting of the Madonna with Child as inspiration. I was focusing on how Argentinean communities freely mixed two seemingly antithetical belief systems, those originating from indigenous peoples and Christianity. I included images derived from various child urns found in the Andean region and textures from renaissance art, like the stylized curls of the Madonna or the gold rays from Ecstasy of St Teresa. The motifs were printed on cloth dyed with natural dyes that could be found in South America like indigo, cochineal, and quebracho.
