In Response to Refugee Issue

A shoe design for the shoe brand Native, in response to current refugee issue.

Based on the research on current refugee issue, I created an infographic board to illustrate the subject and articulate some of its crucial problems. This board visualizes the abstract data to make it more approachable for a broader audience. Through symbols that are universally understood, simplified shapes that represent concrete objects, I was able to create a clean poster with minimal texts and images, but with clear communication and purpose.
Studies and sketches on feet's biological structure and shoe shape.
In a series of experiments and explorations in forms, colors and materials, I applied different patterns that reflect on refugee issues and recycled materials that is produced through refugee crisis. For example, the pattern in the lower right corner design represents inclusiveness of individuals and hope for better life through colorful dots; the material of the upper left corner design is mainly from life vest, including the red vinyl/coated nylon, and the reflective strip.
The final design features:
     + A boat-like form that epitomizes the vehicle of the refugee's journey for a better life;
     + Navy color and rock pattern represents sea/floating, wave/turbulence and land/arrival;
     + Shoelace in a shape of an oar, in color red that represents the bond among all human beings and the idea that "we are tied together", by the implement of an oar and boat;
     + Colorful dots inside the shoe that symbolize inclusiveness of individuals and hope for better life.
