This map shows the growth of Boston's land mass from 1630 until the present by overlapping historical maps. The size of the maps show relative size of the city proper [as the importance of the outskirts grew, so did the boundaries of the maps drawn]. Overlays of color on landmass show growth over time. The 1630 condition is shown on top, with successively darker layers underneath, which describe the addition of land [the lightest areas have been there the longest, the darkest are the most new, or artificial].
