Harbour island of Vlieland
extention and redesign harbour area, Municipality Vlieland, Staatsbosbeheer 2001-2007 (ARCADIS)
In 2007 the Yacht Harbour of the marine island of Vlieland has been expanded. Based on the specific conditions of the island, its nature and the surrounding tidal sea, a masterplan for the area has been designed. For the harbour and it’s direct surroundings the masterplan has been detailed in a public space plan that has been realised. It consist out of the outlines of the new port, a vantage point, nature development and a typical dutch ‘dike’ to provide a safety barrier for high tides.

Many of the existing and highly valued old pavement materials such as granite boulders and reused.  In addition of the historical continuation that could be provided in this way, the money saved could be used to upgrade special points such as the harbour vantage point, the new build port offices and the pedestrian boulevard.
The new expanded harbour fits perfectly in its beautiful natural surroundings that are tangible and visible right into the heart of the harbour itself. The modern comfort provided for ships and the buzzing atmosphere makes it an attractive part of the island and a destination in itself.
