Ascent (2016) Ali Bartlett and Emily Whynott

Ascent is a video installation that immerses its participant in an experience characterized by discomfort. It consists of fabric and looped string attached the wall by microfilament, a speaker, and projector. As its participant ascends the staircase, they find themselves in an increasingly uneasy position because of the gradually lowering ceiling. The end of the stairwell contains only a blinding light surrounded by bunched-up fabric accompanied by an unnerving low frequency hum. The stark white string and fabric extend from the pre-existing architecture of the fire escape, mimicking and continuing the staircase. In this way, the installation reverses the area’s original purpose as a means of escape. The location of Ascent is as significant to the participant’s experience as the structure itself. The high ceilings, mechanical background noises, and washed out colors create an institutionalized and sterile environment.
