This 50 Series for Victor Lara's Foundation Drawing Studio Final is an exploration of how thread interacts with skin. Most of the drawings are self portraits of thread tied around my face or hands. I completed each drawing in about 5 minutes, experimenting with both dry and wet charcoal. I found that it captured the uncomfortable and gruesome distortions of the skin made by various overlapping threads better than any other medium. The first portraits were more stiff and heavily focused on the defining the shapes created by the dark shadows but later evolved into fluid and relaxed drawings. As I progressed throughout the series, I realized that I could let the wet charcoal do its work on the paper and create the same unsettling distortions that I was trying to create in the more controlled portraits.
