Rotoscope Semester Project

Rotoscope Project
(Digital Art class semester project)

Inspiration:
I've always wanted to illustrate people's emotions and movements and I also wanted to animate people’s exact movements but, I wasn’t interested in making a storyline so I decided I wanted to rotoscope.

Goal:
To develop and animate a rotoscope out of a short homemade video.

Learning process:
After watching a few videos on how to rotoscope and a few examples I had a broad idea of what I wanted to do and how to do it.
I also took a private animation class which helped me with the basics.

Recording the video:
Since I knew that rotoscopes take a long time to make and develop I wanted to record a short video.
I didn’t want it to be too boring and simple so I recorded my brother catching a soda bottle, something smooth and quick.
I knew from the beginning that rotoscoping required a lot of patience and time. I began to outline every detail I wanted on the animation until I realized that the more detail it had the longer it would take me to finish the project in time.

The video had more than 220 frames which required me to outline 220 frames by the end of the semester. I noticed I was only doing 3 frames per day so I sped up the process of outlining by skipping details like eyelashes, clothing details, nails, etc. I ended up doing about 4-5 frames per day.
Final product:
