Plates Out of Clay
From a custom slab of ceramics, 100 plates were made through cutting out and pinching their edges. Each of the 100 plates hangs on one side of a wall, flanked by the remaining cut outs of slab, featuring negative space. One side focuses on the usable, while the other focuses on what is unusable. As viewers interact with the whole of the installation, their heads may be seen through the cutouts of negative space. What could once be discarded as waste, now frames what is truly important: people. The interactive nature of this piece, combined with the habituated action of its making, asks the question of what is valuable.
