Made from wood, steel and concrete this functional lamp stands 5 feet tall and weighs 80+ pounds. I wanted to show the process of pouring concrete while still creating a functional object. I chose a lamp because when you think about a lamp you think about its portability, but in this case the weight alone makes this lamp one that is meant to stay put for a while. I purposely poured the concrete in a way that allowed for bubbles, and cracking so that you could see through the concrete, another contradictory I liked playing with.
I started by welding the steel frame and making the plywood mold. Then I mixed and poured the concrete. After it dried I took off the outer mold layer and installed the light.
