Japanese Lantern
or Chochin in Japanese,
is a traditional lantern crafted
from bamboo frames
and washi papers.
It was first documented
in Choya Gunsai, which
was a collection of poetries,
Emperor and government
orders, and letters compiled
in 1116 during Heian Era.

how Chochin originated,
the most convincing one
is that it came from China.
The most characteristic
feature of Japanese
Lantern is its foldability,
but when it first was
introduced, it looked
something like bamboo
basket covered with papers.
