Swarovski Collaboration: The Three Graces

During Wintersession, I took a class that was sponsored by Swarovski through the Painting Department. Each student came up with an initial design to propose to the Swarovski team. With a specific budget from Swarovski and the help of visiting artists, a final piece was created. In March, the exhibition titled Sparkle was held at the Swarovski Headquarters in Cranston, RI. The class was documented for a website that was launched this past spring.

The image of the Three Graces is embedded within the pattern of this piece. These symbolic muses of the arts are said to have endowed artists with creative ideas and are often associated with mirth, adornment, beauty and seduction. Crystals share these same qualities. The sparkle of Swarovski Element crystals is especially seductive.

In addition to the glamour of the reflective sparkle, the crystals also create a refraction of the image and project a dispersion of rainbow light. The figures of the Three Graces have been abstracted by the optical properties of the crystals, creating a dynamic relationship with the imagery through repetition and polarization.
