Sagrada Familia Planter

Sagrada Familia Planter
Drawing inspiration from various elements of Spanish culture, I developed a design for a bi-level gardening fixture. I was interested in Gaudi's iconic architecture in Spain, especially the Sagrada Familia. To develop a design for the famous church, Gaudi used an intricate system of weighted string, a method which created an upside model with perfect lines, completely dictated by gravity. (To imagine the model right side up, Gaudi placed a mirror beneath it.) My hope was to create a space for an upside-down garden by drilling holes into the upper level of the structure, but due to limited time I was unable to.

The piece is made out of reclaimed cedar boards, and will be whitewashed and decorated with designs that recall the Islamic ceramic tiles and decorations of Moorish Spain. I would love it if the planter could be used to grow all the ingredients needed to make gazpacho, one of Spain's most popular soups!

to hold them at a 45 degree angle.
