Library spaces have evolved over the years and now serve multiple roles. Media available through libraries now include print, audio, video, as well as tactile forms of learning.
Staff at the Art+Architecture Library, located on the first floor of Cowgill Hall at Virginia Tech, wished to create a space that exemplified a forward thinking approach towards a reading environment. The preexisting tables and chairs populating the library suggested a more formal environment, gearing users toward individual quiet study. As such, the space did not seem inviting for casual reading, sketching, or group conversation.
My studio was challenged with the task of creating a piece of furniture that fosters a relaxed casual space that is multifunctional for individuals, groups, and storage of library materials.
We were tasked to create a quarter scale prototype of a furniture piece that meets the needs of the library as it continues to grow and change.
Myself and another student, Celsete Greenbaum, worked in partner to create a chair that met these requirements. Using a system of ball bearings, we created a pivoting acrylic sheet, meant to function as an informal writing surface for jotting down notes or quick sketches when inspiration hits. Casual storage is located beneath the seat to hold a book bag or a few books or periodicals.
