Manila housing policies
field trip | 2013
The municipality of Metro Manila, capital of the Philippines, has an enormous housing problem. The growing cities fail to accommodate the new population, and a big part ends up living in slums. As part of a semester studio at Lund Tekniska Hogskola (LTH, Sweden), and working with the NHA (National Housing Authority) in Quezon City and local NGOs such as TAO-Pilipinas, the challenge was to find alternative solutions in terms of urban planning and phasing to relieve part of the pressure.
The following pictures are showing the various housing projects NHA has built over the recent years to cope with the growing demand for housing. The pictures were taken during various field trips in 2013, where the goal was to assess the situation, interview local residents, and gather data that would help the collaboration with NHA. The work resulted in a Long Term Design Guideline for Quezon City, as well as test projects and a paper that can be downloaded here, or at the bottom of the page.
