Suspended Planes

This architectural sculpture is a study of the interaction between form and space that it inhabits.  The intent was to create an object that can interact with shadow and light, whether it is concentrated light, scattered, or reflected by the object in space.  The sculpture is installed on suspended wire cables.

The entire structure grows out of three pieces of wood connected through chisel-cut joinery, which creates the basis of three central planes.  The entire form is suspended at an angle so that the main point of connection is at the center of suspension.  Smaller pieces of wood branch out parallel or perpendicular to the three central planes.
By painting the entire sculpture white, the form almost disappears into the background, bringing the play of shadows into focus.

Light and shadow projected off of wood sculpture.
