The toile pattern was a staple in my family's home, which my Dad built from nothing and my Mom designed, she sewed everything for the house, pillows, curtains, slipcovers for chairs & couches, she reupholstered chairs and so much more.  When I was younger I didn't think much of the beautiful house I lived in but when I started going to school it became a point of pride for me, people assumed because I lived in a big house with ornate patterns and curtains I had a lot of money. This was not the case for us, it was always fun to pretend. My parents got divorced when I was four years old and my Dad moved out of the house he built. I feel going through a divorce made my siblings and I very close and being in this house my dad built was a way of still having him around.

My mother is selling our home this year as there are no longer as many people to fill it up. This project was a way of mourning and letting go of this home which I've loved so much. This is as much a celebration of my family and our time in our beautiful home as it is a real recognition of the changing nature of it (my family).

I re-upholstered a chair that was covered with a classic black and white Toile that my mom covered many years ago, now I have re covered it with a silk screened version of this toile. The pattern is made up of hand drawn versions of family photos that were taken at the house.
