Cloaked in blue and illuminated in gold, the poised figure
captures the spectrum of color among her tangled bedsheets.
In this piece, I explored the relationship of color and light,
choosing to use a looser style compared to my other oil
paintings. I focused on the woman, tightening up on her Qi Pao
and the fabric next to her to capture the illumination of her form.
I deliberately used a vignette style by fading the corners into
darkness as to direct attention to the elegant woman.
I chose to paint her in a traditional Chinese Qi Pao to honor my
Chinese heritage and embrace the culture that has formed me. By
painting her profile image, I had the opportunity of incorporating
her smooth features and classical hairstyle. Although my focus
seeks to explore color and light, I still include a key element of
Chinese culture to integrate an important aspect of my life into
