Starfish and Coffee Bracelet
Sterling silver found-object
From the Prince album, Sign O the Times (1987), is the song,   Starfish and Coffee.  It's about a little girl - Cynthia Rose - who saw the world a little differently than everyone else.  She was a dreamer, a believer, a free-spirit uninhibited by popular opinion.  The other kids in the class were reluctant to believe her when they asked her about the contents of her lunchbox until they peeked inside and found that what Cynthia Rose had said all along was true:
Starfish & Coffee
Maple syrup and jam
Butterscotch clouds and a tangerine
A side order of ham
If U set u're mind free baby
Maybe u'll understand
Starfish & Coffee
Maple syrup and jam
The song - though you would've had to owned the album to even know it existed, as it never got airplay - was always a favorite of mine (I guess I felt a kindred spirit).  So, when I found this antique sterling silver butter knife, it just seemed to beg to become a tangible manifestation of the song.
I cut the knife into links.  The phrase on the blade, I pierced - or cut with a fine saw blade.  I carved the coffee cup in wax and cast it in silver - it is soldered to the blade.  The toggle, or clasp, is a starfish cut from copper.  It slips through the handle of the coffee cup to hold it all together.
There are a few minor touches that I intend to add but, for the most part, I was very pleased with the way it turned out.
