For my final assignment, I decided to create a soundscape as I wanted to integrate sound into the installation for my final folio. My series, The Darkest Nights Will End, is about my connection to the city and how I perceive Melbourne as I wander the urban streets during the night. My work is quite dark and it reveals the anxiety that I hold for the city. As for the soundscape, I wanted to record the city every time that I wandered the streets in the hope of capturing the noises in which causes me distress. I hate being in the city – I find the noise too loud, the streets too overcrowded, babies crying, kids screeching, birds fighting over food on the streets… with these noises, I wanted to create an urban scene with annoying and overbearing sound, constantly piling on top of each other to create a build-up of anxiety. To get the result that I desired, I had to record long pieces which consumed quite a lot of time as I had to listen to the recordings and pick out the main parts which interested me. This snippet of the soundscape is a work in progress for my installation as I am aiming to create a soundscape which will be approximately 15 minutes long. I am quite happy with the results so far, although I feel that the soundscape isn’t as intense as I would like it to be and I feel that I must build up the noises a lot more so that I can create that sense of being overwhelmed with so many irritating sounds at once.
