SPS Short Postal Service

SPS improves the contact between the elderly in care homes and their relatives. By combining the old tradition of letter writing with new digital ways of communication by means of SMS and mail, SPS intents on bridging the elderly and the young.

By physically posting a letter, the elderly will in fact be sending a mail or writing a text message. The receiver will be addressed by means of phone number or mail address, and will receive a scan of the letter, on which the person in question will be able to answer like a regular mail or text message. The reply to the elderly will instantly be printed and thus be tangible and visibly lying in the letter box. This time perspective creates a greater sense of presence and shortens the distance to the relatives outside the care home.

SPS is thought to prevent the exclusion of old people caused by their loss of abilities and the often busy lives of the young. Instead SPS seeks to include the elderly by making new means of technology available, in an easy understandable and accessible way based on a medium already known to them.
