Week 3 - Photo Journalism

This week was dedicated to photography for presenting a story through photography.

I found myself working through this and having a lot of difficulty. We were expected to take photos of a story but couldn't make it staged. For privacy reasons part of me didn't want to take photos of random people without their permission so i went for the second best. Got my friends drunk and took photos of them.
title: Southern comfort onions
technique: Photography - shutter speed:1/10000, ISO: 1000
process: While cooking dinner i readied my camera to take photos of the fire. I put the camera on burst mode so i could get a number of shots of the fire and this was the best one without giving the shot to much light.
reasoning: Because the night was about having drinks and having fun, while cooking i thought a shot of the fire was a nice touch as we all fracked out over how much it went up. Also because of the alcohol the flame was a different colour and it really speaks of the night we had, the same as always but definitely different.
reflection: I think it was smart of me to do this once and use a burst mode. Because of the amount of alcohol we used the fire almost reached my roof which could have ended badly. But i enjoyed this final product with no editing outcomes, its just a raw file of fire.

title: The Drunks Laughter
technique: Photography - photoshop and lightroom. shutter speed:1/500, ISO: 8000
process: Most photographs for spur of the moment photos trying to capture parts of the night. This photo was simply giving her a new drink and she was extremely excited.
reasoning: For most of the photos i wanted to capture the joy, although we do this often and always have a good time, this night was about just getting plastered. I wanted to capture how one diteriates through the use of alcohol and use my friends as the guinea pigs.
reflection: All photographs were taken throughout the night, steadily they got worse and worse as my ability to change settings and sit straight to take decent photos, but that adds to the story of the night. I really liked taking photos of my friends because they don't care how they turn out, were all very much in the moment people. Also i don't usually do people so it was nice to try capture emotion.
title: Pimm's, mint, orange, lemonade and more Pimm's
technique: Photography with no post production. Shutter speed: 1/1000, ISO: 4000
process: While everyone had a drink i took the chance to take a photo of the bucket of pimm's we had. I wanted to capture the orange and mint and how it looked in this horrid green bowl.
reasoning: I wanted to take photos of objects as well as people to better get na understanding for the night. Without the objects it would just be photos of drunk people and not of what they were drinking.
reflection: This photo isn't great, it is blurred and the colours are horrible.  But i wanted to get a feel for what the place was looking like and what the night was about. The drink looks extremely messy and that is how the night went on. With just 5 people we made a huge mess.
title: But what about the onions?
technique: Photography. shutter speed: 1/1000, ISO: 4000
process: I waited while everyone was serving up the food to capture my friend grace (with the headband) who was really wanting to try my onions and i said they weren't ready to capture her disappointment.
reasoning: I wanted to try my best at photographing different facial features and reactions, timed this one to a tee without her realising i took the photo.
reflection: I really like this photo as you can see the focus is on her face in portrait and seeing her upset pouting face. I jut wish i had time for a tripod to get a less blurring shot. If i put up the framerate i might have got a more crisp shot, but i think this also plays to the whole theme of a messy night.
title: Nothing but cup
technique: Photography. shutter speed: 1/1000 ISO: 2000
process: I invited my friends to a round of beer pong and i took this photo of my friend throughing the ball into the other persons cup.
reasoning: This was the only decent moving shot i could take as by this time i had already lost a round of beer pong. If i was in a clearer state of mind i would have raised the free rate to make for sharper shooting. I wanted to try to capture movement of the night as things got very spirited with the games we were playing.
reflection: As mentioned in the reasoning section i would have loved to get some better action shots of the games as they could have come out really nice and sharp, but again as mentioned in other images throughout the night it was harder and harder to take photos and this i feel is represented quite well throughout all the images.
title: almost half the bottle
technique: Photography. Shutter speed: 1/800, ISO: 2000
process: This was the same as the green bowl, while no body was touching the bottles i wanted to get a nice close up of the bottle i was drinking from that night.
reasoning: I wanted to put some more objects into my work to not just get photos of people.
reflection: I actually really like this photo, the fade from the front to back is really nice and the colours all work  together really well. If was going to do anything different i would spin the bottle to show the name. I just think its a good representation of the night. Half a bottle gone, the background is messy and the light is unnatural and horrible.
