Extruded Aluminium Shelving

The Brief
Design a product which utilises both an aluminium alloy and the extrusion process

The product may either:
– involve material substitution or
– an existing design or be a completely new design
Solution
In line with the brief, high-end, space-saving shelving was designed to suit any room within a household.

Once in the downwards position, the anodised shelving is perfect for ornament display or storage. After folding the shelf into an upright position, it now doubles up as a magnetic noticeboard (height permitting).

Hidden magnets within the hinge feature of the shelf ensure it remains in the upright position whilst a horizontal support on the wall mounted bracket keeps the shelf parallel with the floor.
Initial Concept
Rapid Prototype Models (ABS) to test initial concept:
The Shelving would be available in a range of colours to suit interior colour schemes.
Visual Renders from Solidworks.
Tool Design
A side project set by Nottingham Trent University was to design the Die Plate for a section of the extrusion:
Tool Stack including Die Plate for one of the shelving components. A Low First was gained from the piece of work.
Award presented by SAPA at NTU Degree Show on 3/6/16.
