Dyslexie | Afstudeer project

Mijn Project
My goal is to provide better guidance for children with an extreme form of dyslexia.
I want to reach the goal by providing certain information to remedial educationalists, speech therapists, remedial teachers and (normal high school) teachers. So you can ensure that children with an extreme form of dyslexia will not be dependent on their handicap.
This project will be used for children around the age of 6.

Het Logo
The logo consist of the brain of a person suffering from dyslexia and an extension cord. The logo represents the idea that someone with dyslexia needs more energy to accomplish tasks.
The font of the brand is designed by graphic designer Daniel Britton. It shows the frustration of reading with dyslexia.

Uitwerking
I wanted to accomplish this task through infographics for teachers. With these infographics it will be easier to help students. The infographics will help teachers understand how to deal with students suffering from dyslexia and help them read better. Additionally, it provide information on the number of children suffering from this disorder.
Beside the infographics there are 60 cards that show which characteristics of dyslexia a student can have, of which 25 cards are positive characteristics.
Three of the cards have a message for the user. One of those is a personal message to the student. The remaining two cards explain how the brain works. A teacher can show the cards to a student, so the student can personally find a way to use the positive sides of dyslexia to outweigh the negative.
The cards come with its own wooden box with a special cover.
Het Brein
Our brain has two sides; they need to work together to make it all work.
Both sides of the brain have their own goal. If you are reading you use the left side of your brain. By repeating the words your brain is able to save all the vocabulary you see. By doing this, we don’t have to keep on repeating everything we have already seen or heard every day. The more you save, the easier it will be to read.
A person with dyslexia has a brain that is structured differently, which makes it harder to remember things. This means that the brain of someone with dyslexia is not saving all the words which makes it harder to read.
A word consists of three elements: meaning, sound and form. Your brain has its own library to understand each of the elements. The brain of someone suffering of dyslexia works differently, causing letters and the sounds switch or shift. That’s why it takes someone with dyslexia longer to recognise information or to understand it.

Infographic
The dyslexic student
For more than 30 years scientists have been conducting research to better understand the dyslexic brain and for more than 15 years we have been calling someone with a reading disorder a person with dyslexia. You will find all the facts in this infographic.
