The Masque of the Red Death, Adults Coloring Book

This project was based off of an assignment for distilling narrative, and I chose to further Edgar Allan Poe's short story, The Masque of the Red Death.
Edgar Allan Poe's writing is a play of vivid, gaudy, and fantastical images that imbue the hearts of readers with mystery and terror. To bring to light the bizarre imagery I decided to make a coloring book illustrating The Masque of the Red Death. This book hopes to create an interplay between language and images in the way that Poe does in his stories.
I selected twenty imperative scenes from the narrative and illustrated them. Overlaying the images with their respective text.
Each image plays with it's own text, but I used translucent paper so that the text could also play with the text creating a mysterious and gaudy effect.
The typeface was chosen keeping in mind the time period of the Gothic, where Poe has set his story.
The illustrations have a certain quality to them, that makes them pertain to the coloring book genre- not too fine or too abstract.
The story speaks of seven stages of life and death, which are illustrated through stained glass windows present in each of the seven rooms.
