The Campaign
Desertification is a phenomenon that ranks among the greatest environmental challenges of our time. Yet most people haven’t heard of it or don’t understand it. This campaign aims to change that.
The campaign materials produced were a series of posters, to raise awareness and to advertise the launch event, along with a campaign information package.
What is Desertification?
Desertification is a soil degradation process that occurs in dry land eco-systems whereby fertile land is turned into barren desert land. The process occurs due to climatic changes and human activities such as deforestation and intensive farming that result in the soil losing its moisture and therefore structure, creating a drier, sandy desert soil.
Campaign Awareness Posters
These two posters would be displayed in public and aim to raise awareness of the campaign.
Poster 1 - Left
This poster has a tactile typeface made of actual sand that becomes weathered and therefore degrades to leave the poster blank, physically enforcing the message of the poster that ‘Culture is Being Degraded’ by the effects of desertification.

Poster 2 - Middle
The second campaign poster has a typeface that has been degraded to reflect the physical effects of the desertification process. The main copy is displayed alongside messages scratched in a variety of languages to showcase the breadth of people that are deeply affected by desertification.

Exhibit Poster - Right
This poster advertises the launch event for the campaign, which is an exhibit by Daesung Lee, showcasing the Future Archaeology photo series. These photographs cleverly display the catastrophic effects of desertification on Mongolian nomads. A custom typeface with letter elements removed was created for the title of the exhibit.
Information Package
This information pack is to be sent to companies and people who may wish to contribute or collaborate with the campaign. It includes an easily understandable booklet informing the reader about what desertification is and what this campaign aims to do about it. It also includes an invitation to the launch event and a business card to create an accessible and personal connection to the reader.
