The Purpose of this adaptive reuse intervention is to createa new identity for the Jane Pickens that coincides with and pays tribute to theformer uses and interventions that had taken place since its original construction. In order to do so successfully, one must notfocus on a specific intervention but take all forms of past into account whichwill then allow a successful new representation of all pasts with the new presentwhile creating a venue, not just for movies, but for all forms of publicentertainment in such a way that while being entertained a guest will beimmersed by the buildings form as well.
Strategy:
The strategy of my design is topreserve the main theater in all its glory while allowing for renovations,improvements, and interventions in the rest of the building yet still beingrespectful of the original structure. The two main interventions will include a large two story mass insertedinto the roof as well as the complete removal and rotation of the front façade.The 2 story addition allows for a new bar and outdoor movie theater while theshifting of the façade allows for more room in the lobby for retail space aswell as a concession bar. Lastly, thebasement level will be completely remodeled for office space and storage.
