Perch
Fabric and product design

The process of designing a product is very important to create an item with quality. Quality is achieved through inspiration, brainstorming, research, concepts, and refinements. This particular product line started from brainstorming 15 different concepts to fins the one with most potential. From there they were narrowed down to three, and then the final concept.

This quote “Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul” was my initial inspiration for these products. The quote is a metaphor, it is defining hope by comparing it to a bird. By using this metaphor she is illustrating that this feeling of hope “perches” or is found in the soul. I used the trees and birds to illustrate the quote, the birds represent hope, and they perch on trees to represent the soul. Hope represents aspiration, desire, optimism and dreams, so I made the color palette with blues and yellows accents to represent nature, and
health for a soothing and clean feel.

Another inspirations for these designs is Charlie Harper and his simplistic birds that have so much character. I decided to do similar simplistic shapes, but use textures and silhouette the birds with their habitat. Another inspiration I grasped from was nature, I used the texture of the trees and brush in the birds, as well as using the wiry and natural silhouettes to contrast the smooth shapes of the birds.

While in the process of creating the products, other material was created to help market and package
the items. Some of the pieces include a catalog, swatch book, purchase orders, business system, an
invoice, and packaging.
