MARISSA LEE BENEDICT
Marissa Lee Benedict is an artist, researcher, writer and instructor currently living in Chicago, IL. For the past three years, she has beenworking on a series of projects that involve attempts to transform algae intobiodiesel by hand. Much of herattraction to the subject has resided in the transformation of matter fromliving organism – algae – into another form of "vital materialism" asfuel for our vehicles, industries and utilities; an alchemical transformationin every sense of the word. She sees her work as a process of “felting”material and meaning in a non-linear but interlocked way, building a growingweb of evocative connections between natural systems, scientific processes, arthistorical trajectory and personal experience.

Marissa Lee Benedict received a BFA from theRhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2007 and an MFA in Sculpture from theSchool of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), where she currently teaches inthe Sculpture Department. She has participated in exhibitions at the LaSalleCollege of the Arts, Singapore, the Arsenal Center for the Arts, MA and at Columbia College, the SullivanGalleries, Zhou B Center, Defibrillator, Heaven Gallery and the Hatch Projectsspace in Chicago. She was awarded an MFA Fellowship from the JoanMitchell Foundation and will be participating in an related exhibition at theCUE Arts Foundation in NYC this June 2012. Her first solo show will be in May 2013 at threewalls, a non-profit exhibition space in Chicago, IL.

In addition to her individual practice, she maintainsa number of collaborative partnerships– most recently with sculptor AndrewBarco on the project H.Y.L.O.Z.O.I.S.M:How You Land Or Zoom in On Inter-Subjective Matter(s) – and for the pasttwo years with fellow Southern Californian artist Luis Palacios as one half of(GRAFT).
