MACHINE KNITTING: HOARDING TORTOISE

Made with a single bed knitting machine, using punch cards and hemming techniques to create pockets. The knitted crop top is inspired by tortoise shells that the shape resembles a backpack. Since the shell acts as a protection for tortoises, I was also inspired by the Japanese warrior armours that is contructed from many small iron and leather tiles, echoing the modular and polygonal shapes that make up the pattern of tortoise shells. This reference is translated through the shoulder pads.
Close up detail of the punch card pockets. The pattern is reversible and inspired by patterns on tortoise shells.
The weight of the pocket pulls the back down, emphasizing the heaviness of the shell.

Multiple hems shoulder pad where pens can be put in the slots
