My spring semester design final for Leslie Hirst. The topic was to create a "game" after our class visit to Slater Mill, a cotton textile mill in Pawtucket. The aspect of the mill that inspired my game was the act of "kissing the shuttle" that was done by weavers in the mill in order to pull the thread out of the shuttle's eye hole more easily. I wanted to simulate that sort of experience and also emphasize how unsanitary the process became when weavers would pass the shuttle on to the next worker. Furthermore, by using candy and a carnival booth setting, I put the concept into a humorous context in order to highlight the seriousness of kissing the shuttle, an act that caused the spread of tuberculosis.
