The project is the result of an analysis of the neighborhoods and the limits of Francon quarry and the potential of these places in creating gathering spaces. In an acupuncture strategy, reduced implantation buildings are located on green spaces that benefit from the architectural potential of the quarry and it’s limits. Visual links are created between built elements, providing a new opening to the quarry. These green areas are landscaped and screened to create different experiences during the day, night, summer or winter. By increasing the frequency of public transportation currently
present, these places will be used by people who live or work in the St.Michel district and that will result in an increasing density around the quarry. This is a major project participating in the quarry, developed in several phases, the first offering 3 interventions.
The third intervention, a restaurant and market, is located on the truck access barrier for dumping snow from the southeast side of the quarry. Considering this reality of snow spill is inevitable in a northern city like Montreal, the project reveals this industrial world rather than hiding it . The concrete slab for trucks in the winter offers the potential to create there a public
square in the summer when not used for its original purpose.
Le projet est le résultat d’une analyse des quartiers aux limites de la carrière Francon et du potentiel de ces lieux à créer des espaces de socialisation et de rassemblement. Dans une stratégie d’acuponcture, de faibles constructions sont implantées sur des espaces verts qui profitent du potentiel architectural de la carrière et de ses limites. Des liens visuels se créent entre les éléments construits, offrant une nouvelle ouverture à la carrière. Ces espaces verts sont aménagés et tramés afin de créer des expériences différentes le jour, la nuit, l’été ou l’hiver. En augmentant la fréquence du transport collectif actuellement présent, ces lieux seront côtoyés par les gens qui habitent ou travaillent le quartier de St-Michel et entraineront une densité grandissante autour de la carrière. C’est un projet de grande envergure participant à la carrière, mais qui se développe en plusieurs phases, la première proposant 3 interventions.
La troisième intervention, un marché-restaurant, est située sur l’édicule d’accès des camions pour le déversement de la neige du côté sud-est de la carrière. Considérant que cette réalité du déversement de neige est inévitable dans une ville nordique comme Montréal, le projet s’insère dans ce monde industriel en le dévoilant plutôt qu’en le cachant. La dalle de béton pour la circulation des camions l’hiver offre un potentiel d’y créer une place publique l’été lorsqu’elle est inutilisée pour sa vocation première.
