Austurstræti
Coloured streetfurniture in the city-center of Reykjavík
In the latter days of summer 2010, Austurstræti was opened to pedestrians and traffic directed elsewhere. Street furniture in bright colours where set up with regular intervals so the street could fully shine as a pedestrian street. These islands of colour where thought as a nice change from the gloom and change the monochromic environment drastically. At first a yellow dot appeared on the intersection of Austurstræti and Pósthússtræti. It marked a new center where people could arrange to meet where cars drove before. Thereby the street changes to a place for pedestrians. Little by little, other islands of colour have been added and carefully situated. Passersby therefore got a chance to take a seat and enjoy all that the street has to offer, either on a green bench underneath a tree, a blue barstool by a blue table or by a yellow kitchen table right in the new hotspot of the city center.
