WEEK 5- SEWING: MACHINE SEWING & HAND STITCHING

Reflection:
Sewing was my favourite hobby since i was young, probably around 7 years old??
I was then a little girl who loved to sew little dress for my barbie dolls, and i even knew how to make tshirt for them too! Trust me, not every 7 years old kid would know how to do this. I usually sewed the sides of the rectangle piece before flip it from inside.

It had been 10 years before i start sewing again. Thus i was pretty excited for the workshop. The objectives of the workshop are:
1.Use the sewing machine to sew basic machine stitches
2.Practice free-motion machine sewing
3.Develop a library of embroidery stitches
4.Execute a sewn illustration.

There are many different ways of hand stitches, which really made me surprise a little. It was my first time to sew with so many different methods.I love sewing. It was fun><

This video i found it really helpful for beginners. I hope you could find some inspiration from this video too!
Beside of hand embroidery, we also learned some basic skills on how to operate a sewing machine.
It had been 10 years since i see sewing machine again. I used to have an old, broken sewing machine back in China, which probably looked something like this:
My grandmother tended to use this old singer and i always sit beside her, watching her sewed my cloth. It had been awhile since i could go back home again last year, but realizing my lovely grandmother became a victim of Alzheimer's disease was a painful experience to me.

Thinking to use sewing machine again, like my grandmother.
I feel like, i miss her.
This video showed you the basic step of setting up a sewing machine .
Hope you enjoy it!><

I was so shy when sewing at home as my mom would laugh at me=_=
"Excuse me, you're sewing? Sewing??" she laughed.
It had been 10 years since we sewed again, neither she nor me.
It just seemed to be ridiculous and funny to me=_=

//Brief
You’ve been commissioned to do an illustration for a lifestyle magazine.
Based on the written magazine article, create a sewn illustration in A4 size.

•Find a written article in a magazine, and base your illustration on the article.
•Your illustration image area should be A4 in size, with excess fabric of an inch all around.
•Integrate both machine and hand stitching in your artwork.

/Experimental Process
I intend to sew one of my favourite celebrities--Audrey Hepburn.
I sewed the silhouette of her illustration with back stitch.

I filled up the empty spaces with Satin Stitch, then i used a sewing machine to form zigzag pattern on the dress.
Let's take a closer look on the pattern.
It was quite hard for me to use sewing machine as i was not using a typical cloth but a piece of wool pant. I need to make sure i must not over-stretch the pant while sewing, otherwise i would get uneven stitch pattern on my pant.
Final work done !!
This took me almost a week to finishTT_TT
I found it so hard to stitch as i got a bad sensitivity of searching the next ideal point to sew on the pant. Besides, i got pricked myself on needle numerous timesTT_TT.

See!
I sewed an illustration on my pant! I feel so proud when wearing it for my dance class >_<
I was wondering if i could sew something as Father's Day gift for my dad....
Should I?? >_<
