Diorama: An Aid to Interpretive Communication

Presentation: https://vimeo.com/168532824

The project was motivated by a need to understand the role of dioramas in interpretive communication for the 21st century. Effective interpretation lets the audience appreciate the subject and awaken their intellect. How can the current diorama, an encased, artistic yet passive display, do this? How can it actively engage a wide range of audience, flooded with increasingly fleeting digital experiences? Can the diorama inform and encourage behaviors such as collective participation, opinion formation and volunteerism in its audience? "See Change" was the project's final proof-of-concept model with the idea, "Out of the box and into the public realm," enabling greater audience-display physical interaction. It was proposed for the project's interpretive strategy to spread awareness about the conservation of Sewri Bay, a haven for flamingos in Mumbai's harbour area. Qualitative research findings from field and literature study, followed by three phases of conceptualisation, prototyping, and critique constituted the design research process. "See Change" offered possible directions for innovating the diorama into scalable, immersive experiences for multiple contexts.
