Summative 2016 Animation

Part 1: Pitch
~60 seconds; 24FPS
Animate to the background music

Summary
This animation will follow Chavvot - a boy that is having trouble growing up - through the various stages in his life. Through this animation, Chavvot will demonstrate the difficulty of shaping an identity for oneself in a society where a person's future is highly dependent on their success as a child. The constant ticking of the clock that follows Chavvot is the immense pressure to succeed - and fast - before he becomes lost in the world of adulthood.

Animation will be done on various frames, with a majority of it being animated on the 3's. This is to offer a change of pace, and have a subtle visual of a change in the story. Character appeal will vary as the animation progresses, Chavvot being a near consistently changing force while maintaining a very simplistic nature. Staging is critical to the animation as the current plan is to have a constant walk cycle passing through various literal "stages" of life. Timing will be used to emphasize both the passage of time and the lack of it. Secondary actions will be used to emphasize conflicts within the animation. Other techniques such as exaggeration, ease in/out, and squash and stretch will be used to aid story telling and add fluidity to the animation.

Story Points

Animate on the 3’s

BGM: Ticking clock. Clock starts off slow.
Crying baby, learning to talk, walking [character drawn with rough, “hairy” lines; Character becomes more defined as time goes on]
Shows character picking up a pen. He starts to draw and the drawings come to life

Scene Change: First day of school
The character wants to use his own pencil, but an arm comes into the frame gives him another one
BGM: Clock gradually ticks faster
Mid Shot: Character writing/studying/sleeping in different settings (i.e. different classrooms, desk at home, library) [lines of character start to become more defined]

Scene change: High School Graduation. Ticking gets faster like a bomb is about to go off as the time for the end of graduation draws near
Close up: Mouth of the principal
 Dialogue: Congratulations, Class of 2016!
Close up: Character covers his head like a bomb went off [BGM: Music stops. Complete silence.] Slowly brings his arms down.
Wide Shot: There is a spotlight on the graduates. They all throw their hats into the air, except the main character.
Spotlight turns off. Everything fades to black.
Everyone walks away from the main character. Character walks from the darkness into the blankness (a white background) [Black to white gradient background]

Animate on the 2’s or on the 1’s

Walks around blankly for a few frames, like he doesn’t know what to do now that the clock has stopped
He stumbles upon a pencil (the same one he had to give up at the beginning) and bends down to pick it up.
Close up: hand touches the pencil. Character design changes to a more childlike/doodle style, similar to the beginning
BGM Change: Similar to the beginning of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. (Carousel music; Music Box)
Starts drawing and dancing, filling the frames with his doodles.
BGM: Music slows down close to the end and comes to a stop
When he finally finishes drawing, he becomes a drawing. Someone is born from the drawing/looking at the drawing (the cycle can repeat)

End
We began the story pitch process by thinking of different possible storylines and subjects and themes we would like to explore.
Here we are in the process of synthesizing the storyline ideas that we came up with.
Part 2: Storyboard
This is one of us drawing out the storyboard on paper.
Here we are rearranging the storyboards because one of us forgot to number the paper.
Part 3: Concept Art
Character Design in Progress: Chavvot
Final Character Design: Chavvot
Concept Art in Progress: Graduation Scene
Concept Art Final: Graduation Scene

Part 4: Final Animation
A tentative walk cycle for Chavvot as a child.
Frame by frame of an action from the graduation scene.
Editing process. In this process we are splicing all of the separate clips together.
