Brief
This brief is about Swatch’s relationship and commitment to the arts, to brand and plan a collaborative exhibition at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai. The four exhibiting artists are Gary Baseman, Mark Ryden, Marion Peck and Tara McPherson. One also had to design a limited edition watch and promo pack based on one of the artists.
Concept
The concept, look and feel for this exhibition was based on the many references to ‘Kitsch’ in the four different artists’ work. ‘Kitsch’ is often seen as unneccesary embelishment and over the top. Through exploring the different connotations and definitions of ‘Kitsch’, the name ‘Bad Garnish’ was born. The name has no reference to the artists’ work themselves, but rather to the subject matter.
