Peripheral Reflection

A project for Stefanie Pender's Spatial Dynamics class, an abstration based on photographic observations of light was to be made and evolved, over the course of a month. My final, curated responce were the following Google Cardboard-esque devices which were based off of an initial foam periscope prototype. The box shaped devices use mirrors to reflect light in different directions resulting in a very different version of vision. The defining characteristic of my light observations was forced perspective, and that is what I used as a prompt to create this.
I created two versions of my device, one that forced you to look to either side, (Your right eye would look 90 degrees to the right from your point of peripheral vision, and the left would do the same but 90 degrees to the left.) and another which force you to look behind you. (Your right eye would be looking over your right shoulder, and your left eye over your left shoulder.)
All the components of each device were created in Adobe Illustrator and then Laser Cut out of masonite, then assembled and reinfoced with Gorilla Glue. The 4" X 2.75" mirrors were then fit into the slots which were pre cut in the top and bottom.
