Bass Fiber Speaker Design

This project was part of a group of experiments using pre-impregnated bast fibers composite . This composite is made of plants such as kenaf and flax, they are structurally strong and stable once formed and are lightweight. The fibers have a thermo set plastic impregnated in them and allow for great molding capabilities, currently found in automobile interiors. Inspired by minimal geometric designs of the past and from speakers in production I wanted to create a new speaker that illustrates the beauty of natural materials while maintaining a high level of sustainability.

Green Speaker re-design

Material :  Bast fiber composite, wood, discarded speaker parts

The housing has been decorated with a personalized geometric pattern laser cut into the wood frame made from poplar and walnut scraps.  To help retain sound quality the inside is lined with high-density material, the bast fiber material has surprisingly good sound properties due to the plastics and density produced in pressings.
