Living with knee pain is a daily struggle, yet many designers and engineers who create products for elderly adults with knee pain have likely never experienced knee pain themselves. To address this paradox, we created a knee brace that emulates the sensation of knee pain. When worn, pressure is applied to specific locations on the knee that are prone to tissue failure and chronic pain. Whether someone is designing a new assistive mobility device, chair, or staircase, testing out their prototype while wearing our brace will help them develop empathy and ensure that it is accessible and painless for the end user. I completed this project along with a partner for "Healthcare by Design", an advanced industrial design studio class at RISD.
