Design objective:
Cities support far fewer species of birds and plants compared with
similar areas of undeveloped land (BBC 2014). Many cemeteries are protected from development, making them prime locations to target to encourage biodiversity in cities. Using digital manufacturing techniques I will design a product which enables individuals to decorate graves with living plants and mosses which encourage other species e.g. bees and butterflies. These miniature ecosystems will be able to be personalized and be a development from the current tradition of laying flowers that die upon the grave. The benefits will be in the cultivation of
ecosystems within the safe environment of cemeteries; and, living plants will mean visitors will not have to look upon dead flowers if the family is unable to tend to the grave frequently.
The whole product can be altered using the Odo software online. The user can select the overall dimensions of the memorial, and set heights for each section to suit the chosen flora.
Once the desired dimensions are set the order is 3D printed and sent to the buyer.
