JACQUARD
Jacquard is a category of fabric that is defined by the style of weaving, which allows the loom to systematically raise independent warp threads of different colours attached to the hooks to create a textured pattern and add diversity to the weaving process.
The use a perforated punch cards allowed to create patterns to be produced quicker and more efficiently, making textured patterned fabrics accessible to a wider audience for a lower price. These are now replaced with automated looms.
THE MOSS PRINT
My subject of study for jacquard was moss. Mosses are tiny, non-flowering plants found throughout the world. They form cushions just a few millimeters thick on walls, rocks and logs. They are soft and damp under touch and exist in a variety of fresh colours in and around us.
Greens in mosses come in a variety of shades and can have yellow or blue undertones that drastically change the appearance of the color. In my final artwork, I’ve chosen a yellow/green as the dominant hues and accents of orange and rust colours on a darker ground fabric.
