Rocky Horror Show: Lighting & Scenic Design
_________
LIGHTING DESIGN, SCENIC DESIGN, SCENIC CONSTRUCTION, LIGHT BOARD OP

I am often brought in as a fixer.
What actually happens is I bring clarity
and action to a creative concept,
even if it is disparately spread
across a team of collaborators.

Cardinal Rep was producing Rocky Horror
in a raw warehouse space, and while
the actors and director were about to
bring a raw, sexy show to audiences,
it needed an atmosphere that emphasized
many elements I saw at play
in the performance:
a seducing, basement rock concert
with many complex, introspective characters
lurking in the shadows about to cast a spell
when you least expected it.

It was at times frenetic
and at times meditative,
with moments that seemed
drugged and others magical.
Lights were hung and placed
in the space to best play off the
warehouse and scenic elements
to immerse the audience and
evoke this multitude of feelings.
I also designed/built light features
on walls and a chandelier that
tied in many symbolic elements
(and released fog) for the show.
