Font Design for Mill Road Cemetery, Cambridge

Mill Road Cemetery lies between Mill Road, Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University. It covers approximately 15 acres and is a now unused Victorian Cemetery. At the centre of the site is an empty area of grass on which once stood a mortuary chapel designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. This chapel was demolished in 1954. A project is currently underway to reproduce the footprint of the chapel using stones set into the grass. These are to have wording on them commemorating the chapel, its architect and the 13 Cambridge parishes that used the chapel and the cemetery. This wording is to be set in a font specially designed for this purpose.

My font is inspired by the Gothic Revival design of the demolished mortuary chapel. The Cemetery stones are mainly mid to late victorian and have also had an influence on the final design.

The font was originally going to be named Harriett Gothic, but I have since decided to name it Cordelia Gothic.

Plan of the footprint of the demolished chapel. The intention is to place wording around the shape on individual stones.
At one end of the chapel footprint there will be round stones commemorating the 13 chapels that used the cemetery.
