Bible Squad Esports - Logo Design

My friend Owen had recently built an Esports team but needed some branding, Now for those who dont realise, Yes, the team name is satirical. He asked me to produce the teams logo to replace the current one. (shown below) I was asked to produce something that used the bible as the main logo, So I set to work on a sketch which I immediatly liked.
I began with the idea of having a bible open but facing backwards; showing the back of the leather bound book.
I made measurments to make sure my drawing was accurate and on point with the design aesthetic.
I scanned in the sketch of the bible (turned out looks rubbish)
I decided to pen tool one of the sides and copy 'n' paste it then used a reflect transformation to have two different halves

using guidelines I created a well constrcuted guide for the bind of the bible to be drawn using a pen tool.
I highlighted it red just to make sure i wasnt crossing it over with the two sides of the bible.
I was to then work on the pages that would fan out at the top of the bible, To do this I needed to build a guideline for the pen tool when I need to curve the line and create a nice ark.
I used this triangle to measure out what half way between the edge of the page nearest to the center bind and the second guide-in from the left hand side of the page. I then copied the traingle to the other side to ensure I had accurate measurements for me to place the guidline so I could create the ark using the pen tool.
After creating the arc I decided to give it a worn-page look of something out of an old book for authenticity.
I then did the same for the bible itself, by giving it a black/carbon grey/leather colour for the sides and a dark grey bind for the middle. I changed the colour of the pages to a more suitable colour but found this made the design look more bland so I reverted it back to the original colour.
Here I the finished illustrator file that I would then take into photoshop to add additional effects.

I set to work on adding text for the logo, I originally wanted the text to be on the actual bible but found this to be tricky in making the logo look presentable.
I wanted to use an old fasion serif font to look authentic but found this annoying and didnt look right to me so I scrapped it in the end.
this was a breaking point for me when it came to photoshop, I tried many differnet techniques and various effects, like creating a chrome metal border to make it appear like a medal of some sort, but nothing worked or looked pleasant, I became very fustrated and left photoshop and headed back to illustrator to finish the flat design logo.
I had no problems going straight back to illustrator as I quickly applied text, and a small crusifix to the bind of the bible which gave the design more character.

I applied a sunset-yellow stroke on the design to make it standout from whatever background that it would be applied to.
I then added two vector images of AWPs that are weapons from the game that the team specializes in (CS:GO) and crossed them over because I wanted a little more character to the design and I wanted to also communicate that it was an esports team. I also applied a red book thread hanging down from the left hand side of the bind to add more authenticity to the over all look of the design and make it appear more like a bible.
We now have the final product, im not sure if it will change at all, if it does i will keep everyone posted! and i will also add screenshot of the team with the new branding.
